Find answers to commonly asked questions regarding the security measures taken on Grom Social to ensure the safety of our members.

Q: HOW IS THE SITE SAFE FOR MY CHILD?

A:

Grom Social has several layers of security built into the site and features 24/7 real time LIVE monitoring, profanity filters and a Parent Portal where parents can monitor their child’s site activity, receive notifications of activity and control their child’s access to areas and features within the site. As required by COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act), all new Grom members require verifiable parental consent during the registration process.


Q: WHAT IS VERIFIABLE PARENTAL CONSENT?

A:

Following COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) guidelines, when a child is determined to be 12 years of age or under, we ask for a parent or guardian email address before we collect any personal information from that child. At Grom Social, we require verifiable parental consent for children 16 years of age or under.

Parents give verifiable parental consent permitting their child to participate in activities on Grom Social and to the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information as outlined in our Privacy Policy that may be associated with these activities. Verifiable Parental Consent is obtained as follows:

  • A signed permission slip submitted by postal mail.
  • A phone call to our toll-free number to speak with a trained Grom Social representative.
  • A simple, one-time payment of $1 to verify parental consent.


Q: WHAT IS LIVE MONITORING?

A:

Live monitoring means an actual live person is monitoring the site and is available to assist members 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Site monitors are also referred to as Grom Helpers/Staff.


Q: DOES THE SITE HAVE STRICT POLICIES AGAINST INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE USE AND CURSING?

A:

YES. Cursing is not allowed on Grom Social. In fact, our profanity filter software monitors every section of the site for curse words and inappropriate language. It filters from a growing list of over 500 bad words and phrases, then converts them to **** when detected. Grom Helpers/Staff may contact, suspend, and/or ban a member when profanity is detected on site.


Q: HOW DOES MY CHILD BECOME FRIENDS WITH OTHERS ON THE SITE?

A:

Only parent approved members can send and receive friend requests. Parents can monitor and control their child’s friendships with other Grom members using their Parent Portal.


Q: CAN ADULTS BECOME MEMBERS?

A:

Grom Social is designed specifically for children ages 5 – 16. Guest accounts can be created by those 17 years and older; however, these accounts have very limited access to the site and are restricted from viewing profiles, making friends or interacting in any way with Grom members.


Q: CAN PARENTS/GUARDIANS BECOME FRIENDS WITH MY CHILD?

A:

No. Parents or guardians that have provided verifiable parental consent for their child/children receive access to their parent portal for the purpose of monitoring their child/children. Parents and guardians are restricted from interacting with any other children on Grom Social.


Q: WHAT CONTENT WILL MY CHILD SEE ON THIS SITE?

A:

Grom Social provides a variety of fun, family-friendly, educational content for kids to enjoy. Grom members can create a personalized avatar, play games, create and learn with apps, view and share original artwork, or “choose their news” by following Grom Fan pages. Grom Fan pages consist of posts, photos and videos specific to a large range of interests meant to engage and inspire. Kids also love watching Grom TV, exclusive videos made By Kids For Kids right here at Grom Social!


Q: HOW DO YOU MONITOR MEMBER GENERATED CONTENT?

A:

Children that are onsite friends have access to their friend’s profile and posted content should that friend’s privacy setting allow it. Parents are able to set the level of their child’s privacy as well as monitor all instances where members interact with each other through their parent portal.

Further safety measures taken by Grom Helpers/Staff and Grom Social technology regarding member generated content are as follows:

Member Communication:

Grom members that are onsite friends are able to send each other messages, live chat, and make comments on each other’s home wall, photos and profile. All comments are filtered using software for inappropriate language. If a comment is deemed inappropriate, the comment will be removed and a member of the Grom team will contact, suspend, and/or ban the member based on the severity of the comment.

Member Profile Photos:

Members are allowed to upload socially appropriate photos of themselves, their friends, and other subjects of interest. For user safety and security, all posts are reviewed by Grom Helpers/Staff.

Member Home Wall:

All posts made to a member’s home wall will be reviewed by our Grom Helpers/Staff. Any posts reviewed and considered to be inappropriate will be deleted immediately and the Grom team will contact, suspend, and/or ban that member from Grom Social based on the post.

Member Photos:

Member’s photos can be posted to Grom Social, but these posted photos will be monitored by the Grom Helpers/Staff. Any photo deemed inappropriate will be removed and the Grom team will contact, suspend, and/or ban a member based on the inappropriate photo.

Live Chat Events:

Members can post their comments and feedback during live chat events. All posts are subject to moderation for the disclosure of personally identifiable information and inappropriate language. If a post is deemed to be inappropriate, the comments will be deleted by our Grom Helpers/Staff and the member will be contacted, suspended, and/or banned based on the severity of the situation.


Q: WHAT TYPE OF MESSAGES MAY BE COMMUNICATED TO MY CHILD?

A:

At Grom Social, we strongly support NO Bullying, internet safety, proper netiquette and good digital citizenship. Our posts encourage healthy lifestyle choices and are meant to inspire kids to be as great as they can be.


Q: WHAT IF MY CHILD IS BULLIED ON THE SITE?

A:

Anti-Bullying messages are displayed throughout the site and are often a topic of discussion on Grom Social. Grom members can report bullies in real time via live chat to any Grom Helper on site (24/7) or parents/guardians can send an email to our Grom Social Support Team at: support@gromsocial.com.


Q: HOW DO I REPORT A PROBLEM ON GROM SOCIAL?

A Grom member can immediately notify a Grom Helper on live chat (available 24/7) or parents/guardians can send an email to our Grom Social Support Team at: support@gromsocial.com.
